100-percent tariffs should be introduced on, among other things, rapeseed oil and peas from Canada. Tariffs of 25 percent will be introduced on pork and water products. The measures will come into force on May 20.
According to Beijing, the tariffs are a response to the 100-percent tariffs that Ottawa introduced on Chinese electric vehicles last August. At the same time, Canada introduced an additional tax on imports of steel and aluminum products from China.
China's Ministry of Commerce states that an investigation into the Canadian tariffs has found that they "disrupted the normal trade order and damaged the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies".
China urges Canada to immediately correct its bad practices, lift its restrictive measures, and eliminate their negative effects, says a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce.
The new tariffs come at a time when both China and Canada are facing a looming trade war with the US, which, under President Donald Trump's leadership, has launched new tariffs and tariff threats.
