A small child passed away after being affected by low sodium levels in connection with treatment at a hospital in Småland, writes Region Kalmar County on its website. The low value was never detected and now the incident is being reported to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate) according to the lex Maria by the hospital's chief physician.
The child's parents had sought care for symptoms of infection and fever on several occasions. The hospital conducted several examinations and treated the child with antibiotics. However, when the child developed so-called hyponatremia, it was never detected.
The hospital has taken several measures and introduced routines to minimize the risk of the incident being repeated.
