The Mayor of Chicago and the US state of Illinois have filed a lawsuit to stop the Trump administration's plans to send the National Guard to the city.

The White House has wanted to send National Guard soldiers from Texas to Illinois and the city of Chicago. But the state of Illinois, which is governed by Democrats, also chose to turn to court to prevent the deployment of the National Guard there.

It was over the weekend that President Donald Trump decided that 700 soldiers from the National Guard would be sent to Chicago, despite protests from the city's mayor and Governor JB Pritzker.

The lawsuit was filed with a federal court in Illinois. Among other things, the state's Attorney General Kwame Raoul referred to the fact that Trump is using American soldiers to "punish political enemies".

The decision "undermines public safety by inciting public expressions of discontent".

The lawsuits come after the Trump administration's decision to deploy state military in the city of Portland in Oregon was stopped by a court. The White House's attempt to send military from the neighboring state of California was also stopped by a court on Sunday.

Trump claims that the targeted cities and states, which have Democratic rule, are unable to maintain law and order – which is responded to by saying that they decline federal help in the current cases.
