Around 200,000 tourists visit the week-long festival each year, which is particularly popular due to Fujiyoshida's picturesque location overlooking Mount Fuji.
But this year the festival will not take place. Residents have protested that the influx of tourists is disrupting their "quiet lives." Fujiyoshida, with a population of just under 50,000, has been inundated with traffic and discarded cigarette butts - and even tourists defecating in people's gardens.
A weak yen is said to be contributing to overtourism, which has also affected other parts of Japan. In Kyoto, for example, "Instagram-obsessed" tourists have been accused of harassing geishas.
Last year, Japan was visited by a record number of tourists: 42.7 million.
