Tuesday's 3-0 defeat to Brighton was the final straw for Chelsea's run in the Premier League. It was the London club's fifth consecutive defeat in the league - a run in which Chelsea has failed to score a goal. Not since 1912 has the club lost five consecutive games without scoring.
The loss leaves Chelsea in seventh place in the Premier League table, seven points behind fifth-placed Liverpool, who currently hold the final Champions League spot.
Rosenior took over as Chelsea manager on January 6, signing a six-and-a-half-year contract. But now, three and a half months later, his time in the post is over.
Calum McFarlane will temporarily take over the job while the club waits for a new manager, reports The Guardian.
In an official statement on their website, Chelsea wrote:
"This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, but recent results and performances have not met the necessary requirements and there is still a lot left to play for this season."
Calum McFarlane will lead the team for the rest of the season. He will make his debut in the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds on Sunday.
The selection of Liam Rosenior's replacement may take time "to make the right long-term appointment," Chelsea announced.
