Sandy Baltimore scored a penalty in the 71st minute and secured 1–1 for Chelsea away against Dutch Twente. Barely ten minutes earlier, Danique van Ginkel had elegantly curled in 1–0 for the home team.
I just thought "Shoot, shoot, shoot at goal". And it became a good goal, says van Ginkel to Disney+ about her goal.
More than an equalizer was not achieved for last year's semifinalist Chelsea.
Super talent got the chance
Coach Sonia Bompastor tried to increase the offensive power in the second half, but despite substitutions by Swedish national team star Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Australian goal scorer Sam Kerr and 16-year-old super talent Chloe Sarwie, there were no more goals.
Nathalie Björn sat on the bench for the entire match for Chelsea, who won both meetings with Twente last year (6–1, 3–1)
We have taken big steps this year. We fought as a team and had a good plan. I'm really proud of our performance, says Danique van Ginkel.
Other Swedish teams had more fun premieres.
Filippa Angeldahl played from the start when Real Madrid began the Champions League group stage by defeating Italian Roma at home, 6–2. The guests equalized twice in the first half, but from the 42nd minute onwards, it was over.
CL debut for United
Alba Redondo made it 3–2 just before halftime, and a few minutes after the break, she fired a volley that Maëlle Lakrar steered in for 4–2.
Caroline Weir made it 5–2 shortly afterwards, and with 20 minutes left to play, Eva Navarro headed in 6–2 to make the home trip to Italy even more sour for Roma.
Hanna Bennison replaced Filippa Angeldahl in the 77th minute, while Real's third Swede, Bella Andersson, remained on the bench.
Wednesday's big Swedish meeting was Manchester United–Vålerenga. In the home team, which is in the Champions League for the first time, Anna Sandberg and Julia Zigiotti Olme played from the start, and Fridolina Rolfö was substituted in the 72nd minute. Vålerenga's starting eleven included goalkeeper Tove Enblom and Linn Vickius, with three more blue and yellow players – Tilde Lindwall, Ronja Aronsson and Marika Bergman Lundin – on the Norwegian team's substitute bench.
Zigiotti Olme was involved in United's winning goal in the 31st minute, after her pass in the penalty area bounced off Arna Eiríksdóttir's hand. The penalty was safely taken care of by Maya Le Tissier, to 1–0.
