According to Open AI, the company behind the service, Chat GPT will become better at identifying and responding to people who experience mental illness, among other things by explaining the dangers of sleep deprivation and strengthening protective measures around conversations about suicide. Open AI also plans updates that make it easier for parents to see how their children use the service.
The announcement, which was announced on Tuesday on the company's own blog, came on the same day that Open AI and founder Sam Altman were sued by the parents of a 16-year-old boy in California who committed suicide in April.
In the lawsuit, it is claimed that Chat GPT systematically isolated the boy and helped him plan the suicide.
"We express our deepest sympathies to the family during this difficult time", says a spokesperson for Open AI in a statement.
In the USA, the case is the latest in a series of alarms about how Chat GPT is used in a dangerous way.
Recently, more than 40 state prosecutors also issued a warning to leading AI companies that the companies are responsible for protecting children from sexually inappropriate interactions.
