After Andersson is voted down, no party leader wants the next government-forming assignment

The first vote on a prime minister has been held. Three more remain before a snap election must be called.

All parties except the Social Democrats (S) voted against Andersson as prime minister. The vote was 248 against and 99 in favour. However, she was not particularly discouraged afterwards.

This is completely expected, she says.

Speaker Andreas Norlén will now call all the party leaders and decide who will receive the next assignment to try to form a government. He will announce his decision on Friday.

Pointing to someone else

However, Magdalena Andersson does not want the assignment to form a government again and is pointing to Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson.

He, in turn, stresses that the red-green parties have a majority in the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament), with 176 seats against 173 for the Tidö parties.

Then basically nothing has changed, says Kristersson.

Another possibility is that Center Party leader Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist could receive the assignment to explore the possibility of forming a government, something the Left Party thinks would be good.

However, she does not want it either.

The Center Party is also refusing to allow a government that includes the Left Party. And the Left Party will never give in to the demand that it be part of a government, according to the party’s group leader, Samuel Gonzalez Westling.

The Left Party has been a support party for decades. But that time is now over, he says.

Left Party: Invite us to negotiate

Left Party leader Nooshi Dadgostar believes Andersson must bring the red-green parties together for proper negotiations as a next step.

I am convinced that she will invite the three other parties to form a new government and develop a government platform.

MPs also voted no on Thursday, and the Social Democratic leader estimates that “a number” of votes on the prime minister will be required before a new government is in place.

I naturally have a full schedule of meetings and phone calls that I will continue to have, says Andersson.

The Speaker has indicated that Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson is likely to receive the next assignment to explore the possibility of forming a government.
