Centre Party leaders to discuss government position as Kristersson explores options

The Centre Party's top leadership will meet on Thursday to discuss the government issue, according to information reported by SVT and Ekot.

The Centre Party has a key role in the ongoing government formation process.

The party has voted for Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson as prime minister, but at the same time cannot accept the Left Party being part of an S-led government.

Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson has now been tasked with exploring the possibility of forming an M-led government. He is expected to try to get the Centre Party to support a centre-right government, but the party will say no to a government that depends on the Sweden Democrats.

According to SVT, the Centre Party’s parliamentary group and party board are expected to discuss the party’s position at a meeting on Thursday. Ekot has similar information.

The meeting has reportedly been planned for some time.

If the Centre Party is to move to the right, the opportunity could come while Kristersson is exploring his options, according to one of Ekot’s sources.

The Centre Party’s economic policy spokesperson, Martin Ådahl, does not want to comment on which meetings are being held. He says the party’s red line against the Sweden Democrats remains.

“We cannot in any way make ourselves dependent on the Sweden Democrats. That is the fundamental problem,” Ådahl told the media after Thursday’s meeting of the Finance Committee.

The red line against having the Left Party in government also remains.

“The important thing now is to understand what the Social Democrats think about this issue. Do they think the Left Party is now ready to join the government?” Ådahl said.

The Social Democrats have so far said that the Left Party is not ready to join a government.

“We have no new information,” said Social Democrat economic policy spokesperson Mikael Damberg.
