Representatives of Hamas, which governs in Gaza, have met with Egypt's intelligence chief and a number of officials over the past 24 hours. They have discussed various ways to stop the hostilities, get in humanitarian aid, and open the Rafah border crossing, according to a high-ranking representative of Hamas.
Another member of the delegation says that Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey are making great efforts to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.
Jake Sullivan, national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, said last week that Biden would make another attempt to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. Experts have, however, warned that Gaza is fundamentally different and much more complex to reach an agreement with than Lebanon.
The Gaza war started on October 7 last year, when Hamas carried out a large-scale attack on Israel. Israel responded by besieging Gaza, bombing incessantly, and deploying ground forces with the aim of eliminating Hamas – which has claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives.
