A delegation from the terrorist-designated Hamas is in Egypt for discussions about a potential ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza. Hopes of reaching such an agreement have been raised after the deal between Israel and the Shia militia Hizbollah in Lebanon last week.

Representatives of Hamas, which governs in Gaza, have met with Egypt's intelligence chief and a number of officials over the past 24 hours. They have discussed various ways to stop the hostilities, get in humanitarian aid, and open the Rafah border crossing, according to a high-ranking representative of Hamas.

Another member of the delegation says that Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey are making great efforts to reach an agreement on a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange.

Jake Sullivan, national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, said last week that Biden would make another attempt to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. Experts have, however, warned that Gaza is fundamentally different and much more complex to reach an agreement with than Lebanon.

The Gaza war started on October 7 last year, when Hamas carried out a large-scale attack on Israel. Israel responded by besieging Gaza, bombing incessantly, and deploying ground forces with the aim of eliminating Hamas – which has claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives.
