Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was sacked from the Ghana men's national team two weeks ago, and will lead the team at the World Cup in North America starting in two months.
For the 73-year-old Portuguese, it is yet another in a series of managerial jobs. Ghana will be the ninth national team Carlos Queiroz has managed, after Portugal, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Iran, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman.
It will be his fourth World Cup as a national team coach, and in the group stage Ghana will face England, Croatia and Panama.
Queiroz has also been head coach of Real Madrid and an assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
