Already in January, the EU Commission promises to launch a "strategic dialogue" about the future of the car industry in Europe. The announcement comes after crisis headlines at many major car brands, which have also led to demands for relaxed environmental regulations.
"It is our responsibility to tailor solutions that are both clean and competitive", says Chair Ursula von der Leyen in a press release.
Germany's Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on his way into Thursday's EU summit in Brussels that he wants to see a European support program for electric cars. At his press conference afterwards, he also announced that the car industry will be discussed when EU leaders gather for their next regular summit in Brussels in March 2025.
According to Council President António Costa, the meeting will focus on competitiveness, trade, and job opportunities.
