All 5,000 residents in the town of Flin Flon in the Canadian province of Manitoba have been ordered to flee south as a forest fire is raging closer.

The fire started on Monday in the neighboring province of Saskatchewan and has since exploded in scope.

Over 20 fires are raging in the province simultaneously. A state of emergency has been declared and more than 17,000 people have received an evacuation order.

Military planes have been deployed to help with evacuations in the more remote communities in the north. Many of the evacuees are expected to be transported to the provincial capital Winnipeg.
