The old relationship we had with the USA based on a deepened integration of our economies and close cooperation on security and military is over, said Carney at a press conference on Thursday.
He simultaneously promised to respond with countermeasures if Trump proceeds with his announced 25-percent import tariffs on vehicles, which are to come into effect on April 2.
Carney, who was elected as Justin Trudeau's successor earlier in March, further stated that Trump's office has contacted him to arrange a first conversation between the leaders in the coming days.
The Canadian leader has previously stated that he is open to talks with Trump, who has repeatedly said that Canada should become the 51st state of the USA, respecting Canada's sovereignty.
Canada is going to the polls on April 28.
