Omar Alghabra, Canada's special envoy for Syria, says in a statement that from a Canadian perspective, "we can play a meaningful role in enabling Syrians to build an inclusive country that respects all its citizens" and "help Syria from falling into chaos and instability".
Canada has, together with many other countries, strict sanctions against Syria, introduced to punish Bashar al-Assad's regime, which was overthrown in December.
Since then, the country has been led by interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa, leader of the HTS (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) movement with previous ties to the terrorist networks al-Qaida and IS. He has, among other things, promised to protect minority groups and religious communities.
