Exports have fallen and jobs have disappeared since American President Donald Trump's tariffs of 25 percent were introduced in March and in June were raised to 50 percent, reports Canadian public service company CBC.

Now Carney is giving a 30-day deadline to Trump. Depending on how the negotiations go, Canada's retaliatory tariffs – which have been at 25 percent since March – will either be raised or lowered.

Carney says that he is introducing a tariff quota for steel imports from the USA, which means that some imports are allowed, but everything above a certain limit will be subject to high tariffs.

The goal is to "protect Canadian workers and companies from the unfair American steel tariffs we have now", according to Carney.
