"Our thoughts go out to the innocent bystander who was injured during the incident," said Secret Service Director Sean Curran in a statement Monday night.
Just over a day after the incident outside the White House, in which a 21-year-old man is suspected of opening fire on Secret Service personnel at a security checkpoint, the picture has become somewhat clearer, according to American media.
The suspected perpetrator died at a hospital from his gunshot wounds, but a bystander was injured when - according to witnesses - 15 to 30 shots were fired at the scene. The bystander's condition is described as serious but not life-threatening.
