Three people died when a bus crashed into a bus shelter in Stockholm, police confirm. Not all have been identified yet. Four people are being treated in hospital, including the bus driver who was arrested following a decision by prosecutors. But there is no indication that the incident was intentional, according to police.

Two of those being treated in hospital have been described as seriously injured and were taken there by ambulance. The third made it to hospital by other means, according to police.

The bus driver has also been taken to hospital.

The person needed to seek medical attention, but as I understand it, they have managed to hold an initial interview, says police spokesperson Nadya Norton.

The bus driver is being held on suspicion of causing death and causing bodily harm, following a decision by the prosecutor. There is currently no indication that the incident was intentional, according to the police.

It was at 3:23 p.m. that the alarms began to come to SOS. Many people were in the busy area around the metro station at the Royal Institute of Technology in central Stockholm.

Several people were hit when the double-decker bus, which had no passengers on board because it was not in service, for an unknown reason drove into one of the bus shelters on Valhallavägen.

Seven to eight ambulances, a large number of fire engines and many police officers were sent to the scene.

“Tragic accident”

Police are not releasing any details about the victims.

"We want to find out the circumstances and hold an interrogation, then we will see if the driver will be released or arrested," says Nadya Norton.

The City of Stockholm's crisis support team was on site during the evening, and the Kommunal union, which organizes employees at the bus depot in question, deployed "all available resources to support members in this difficult time," according to chairwoman Malin Ragnegård.

SL's CEO Erik Norling describes the incident in a statement as a tragic accident and says that the public transport company is assisting the police.

"We are all keen to clarify what happened as soon as possible in order to take the necessary measures if necessary."

"Interrupted in the middle"

Police technicians investigated the accident scene in the evening, when many people were on their way to and from the subway. Inside the barriers, a few police officers moved around the bus at 5:30 p.m.

Klara and Ellen live nearby and walked to the scene to see what happened. They have friends who go to Engelbrektsskolan, opposite the bus shelter.

"It's crazy that it's happening right next to the school. Several of our friends saw it happen, it's a bit scary," says Ellen.

Michel Wu and Theodor Darra are studying at the Royal Institute of Technology and were attending a lecture when the accident occurred.

Our teacher interrupted in the middle and said there had been an accident, so we went down to see what had happened, says Michel Wu.
