Burkina Faso has been ruled since a military coup in the autumn of 2022 by a junta led by Ibrahim Traoré. The junta took power with promises to better address the threat from jihadist groups, but has also cracked down hard on political dissent. It has also accused the government of Côte d'Ivoire of harboring many of the designated enemies.
According to the junta's security minister Mahamadou Sana, a group of soldiers "recruited by our nation's enemies" planned to attack the president's, junta leader Traoré's, regime on April 16.
The masterminds behind this, who are abroad, are all in Côte d'Ivoire, says Sana.
The military coup in Burkina Faso followed a wave of similar coups in the region, where several countries turned away from European cooperation partners and drew closer to, above all, Russia.
