The teams went into halftime tied at 0–0. But after 70 minutes, BP had run through a listless AIK, scoring five times to lead 5–1.
Only then did AIK come to life. After three quick goals, AIK kept up the pressure on BP’s goal until the 97th minute, when Johan Hove scored to make it 5–5 and send the stadium into a frenzy.
But despite the unlikely comeback, it was BP who had the last laugh.
In the 99th minute, BP’s Oliver Zandén got hold of the ball, stormed past right-back Mads Thychosen and into the penalty area, then played it to Mads Hansen, who decided the match with the last kick of the game: 6–5 to BP.
“It’s value for money for those who came here today,” BP’s Simon Strand said on TV4 afterwards.
Asked whether AIK should have been going for less after drawing level at 5–5, AIK’s two-goal scorer Sixten Gustafsson said:
“We should always go for three points.”
According to the Swedish Football Association’s statistics, this is a new record for the number of goals scored in a half. The previous record was ten goals, set in 1945, 81 years ago, when Norrköping won 11–1 on aggregate against Djurgården.
