The New York Stock Exchange began Monday's trading with a clear decline following President Donald Trump's statements over the weekend about introducing new tariffs on Canada's, China's, and Mexico's exports to the USA.
However, the leading indexes recovered somewhat when it became clear that the introduction of the Mexico tariffs would be delayed by a month. At the close, the broad S&P 500 index had fallen 0.8 percent, the Dow Jones industrial index 0.3 percent, and Nasdaq's technology-heavy composite index 1.2 percent.
Among the losers were electric car giant Tesla and iPhone manufacturer Apple, both dependent on trade with China. They lost 5.2 and 3.4 percent, respectively.
For Facebook owner Meta, like Tesla and Apple part of the index-heavy "The magnificent seven", it went better. The share rose 1.2 percent.
