Johan Britz, like all other Liberal ministers in the government, intends to resign if Liberal Party leader Simona Mohamsson is impeached on Sunday. But he is not worried.
"Simona has presented a plan for a party that is in a very vulnerable situation. She shows leadership and is prepared to lead this party towards election day. And she has been clear about what she believes is needed to make things better for the Liberals, and I have not heard anyone who has a better idea," he says.
Was a misjudgment
Mohamsson hugged SD's Jimmie Åkesson at a press conference on Friday and presented the "Sverigellöftet" agreement, which means that the parties can sit in government together. It was necessary for a party that is around 2 percent in opinion polls, according to Britz.
We have historically low support among the electorate. The line we had on the government issue was not coherent.
He believed that L's previous statement about keeping SD out of the government would attract voters to switch blocs from the left to the right.
"It has turned out to be a misjudgment," he says.
Do you think your public support will increase if Mohamsson gets support on Sunday?
It is difficult to give any forecast, but I am convinced that it is necessary that we do this. Is it enough for things to go well for the Liberals? No, it is unlikely, but we will need to do more.
Several drop out
The turnaround will be an opportunity for L to talk about substantive issues instead of the government issue, according to Britz.
At the same time, many representatives have resigned from their positions after Friday's announcement. One significant development is that Jan Jönsson, leader of L in Stockholm City Hall and who has long been critical of SD cooperation, has left the Liberal Party's party board, according to DN.
I hope that as many as possible choose to stay in the Liberals.
This issue has been hanging over our party for many years to some extent. There are those who think we should have done this much earlier. There are those who think we shouldn't have done this at all. I have full respect for both of those views and opinions. But there are six months until the election. And a leader of a party needs to act when the situation for the party is the way it is.
