A British former soldier is acquitted of murder and attempted murder during the "Bloody Sunday" 1972. The trial is described as a milestone in Northern Ireland's conflict-filled history.

A former British paratrooper, called "Soldier F", stood trial for the massacre that took place on the so-called Bloody Sunday in 1972. The former soldier was accused of two murders and five attempted murders.

On Thursday, a court in Belfast ruled that the prosecution had not been able to prove that the man opened fire on unarmed civilians.

The now acquitted former soldier shot, according to the prosecution, at fleeing demonstrators during a civil rights demonstration in January 1972 in Derry (Londonderry). 13 people were killed and 15 injured.
