Politicians from the right-wing populist National Rally have started a petition to give Brigitte Bardot a state funeral, similar to the procession and ceremony in the Madeleine Church in Paris that rock star Johnny Hallyday received after his death in 2017.
But Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure dismissed it, saying that this type of national tribute should only be reserved for people who have made special contributions to their country.
Bardot was certainly an excellent actress, Faure believes, but he notes that in recent years she allied herself with right-wing extremist forces.
She betrayed French values and was convicted several times for racism.
Local authorities say the plan for Brigitte Bardot is to be buried in Saint-Tropez in a cemetery near the sea, but no date for the funeral has been announced yet.
The French actress, who died at the age of 91 on Sunday, had expressed her wish to be buried in her own garden with a simple wooden cross on her grave.
