According to preliminary results, Oligui Nguema received over 90 percent of the votes. His main rival is said to have received 3 percent of the votes, and six other candidates less than one percent in the election, which is the first since the 2023 military coup.
The coup makers, led by Brice Oligui Nguema, then ousted Ali Bongo, whose family has ruled Gabon for over 50 years. After the coup, he was sworn in as transitional president and promised to return power to the people through "free and transparent" elections.
Critics have warned before the election that the constitution and electoral law have been changed to give the general a comfortable ride to the presidency, reports BBC.
The channel further reports that opposition candidates who had a real chance of challenging Oligui Nguema were prevented from running.
Voter turnout was 70.4 percent, according to the Interior Ministry.
