Salvadoran Kilmar Ábrego García has been released from US custody. He was placed there after being allowed to return to the US from El Salvador, where he was wrongly deported in March of this year.

The district judge in the US state of Maryland ordered the release of Ábrego Garcías, who, according to the ruling, was arrested without any legal grounds.

Ábrego García has become a symbol of the Trump administration's tough immigration policies. He was detained, deported, and held in a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. The charges against him were disputed, but once back in the United States he was charged with human smuggling. He has also been accused, despite his denials, of being part of the notorious criminal group MS-13.

30-year-old Ábrego García is a resident of Maryland where he has a wife and children who are American citizens.

While in custody, Ábrego García was threatened with deportation to Uganda, which reportedly has a migration agreement with the U.S. What will happen after his release is still unclear, according to his lawyer.
