The boy underwent surgery abroad and suffered bleeding and a blood clot in his head during the operation. During follow-up in Blekinge, the increased pressure was not initially detected, and the boy later had to undergo emergency surgery.

The Blekinge Region assesses that he has suffered a serious medical injury. If the increased pressure had been detected earlier, it might have been possible to avoid the vision loss, the region writes in a press release.

Reporting under Lex Maria means that healthcare providers must report events that have resulted in, or could have resulted in, serious healthcare harm to the Swedish Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo). The aim is to learn from mistakes and ensure safe care.
