Relatives of the victims of the terrorist attack on Bondi Beach are calling for a national, independent investigation into the rise of anti-Semitism in Australia, Australian media report.

The call comes from 17 families with relatives who were injured or killed when two men opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney's famous beach.

The relatives are calling for an independent national inquiry - a so-called royal commission - into “the rapidly increasing anti-Semitism” since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, and for an investigation into “the shortcomings in law enforcement, intelligence and policy” that led to the attack on Bondi Beach.

"We demand answers and solutions," the relatives wrote in a statement.

So far, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has argued that a national inquiry is not needed, but believes it can be done at the state level in New South Wales, where Sydney is located.
