Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro's 27-year prison sentence has been upheld by the country's highest court.

Brazil's Supreme Court has announced that no further appeals will be allowed in the case. Right-wing nationalist Jair Bolsonaro was sentenced in September to 27 years in prison for trying to stage a coup after his 2022 election loss, when his supporters stormed parliament and government buildings.

Just a few days ago, the 70-year-old ex-president was taken from his house arrest to a detention center – this after he tried to destroy his ankle shackles with a soldering iron in a suspected escape attempt.
