Four of the five judges in the case in the country's highest court have now announced that they are convicting Bolsonaro.
Earlier in the week, two judges landed in a guilty verdict, which was followed by a third choosing to acquit on Thursday morning because he considered the case to be political.
Late on Thursday evening, the fourth of them decided to convict the ex-president and a short while later it became clear that the fifth and final judge had also chosen to convict. The judges will now together determine what the penalty will be. It is clear that the 70-year-old risks a lengthy prison sentence.
Bolsonaro, who claims to be subjected to political persecution, has been under house arrest since before, awaiting the verdict. The case concerns the events after the presidential election in 2022, where Bolsonaro is accused of having attempted to stage a coup to retain power.
US President Donald Trump, who is allied with Bolsonaro, has previously called the trial against the ex-president a "witch hunt". Shortly after the announcement of the guilty verdict, Trump was asked by reporters in Washington what he thinks about the matter and replied that he is "very surprised" and displeased.
