The 70-year-old former president, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for a coup attempt, underwent surgery at a hospital in the capital, Brasília.
"Successful surgery completed, without complications. Now we are waiting for him to wake up from the anesthesia," says his wife, Michelle, on social media.
At the same time, the former president has nominated his son, in a letter, as a candidate in next year's presidential election. 44-year-old Flávio, a lawyer and senator in the country's parliament, announced in early December that his father had nominated him as a presidential candidate.
Jair Bolsonaro says his son represents a continuation of the “path to success” that began during his own term in office from 2019 to 2022.
"We must reclaim the responsibility to lead Brazil with justice, determination and loyalty, according to the hopes of the Brazilian people," Bolsonaro writes.
The current 80-year-old president, Lula da Silva, has already announced his ambitions to be re-elected in next year's elections.
