Around 40 people have been killed in an attack in northeastern Nigeria, according to government sources. The terrorist movement Boko Haram is suspected to be behind the attack in the state of Borno, and residents in the region are being urged to stay in "safe areas" as further atrocities are feared.
The Islamist Boko Haram has been spreading terror in the region since 2009, with varying brutality and intensity. The latest attack is believed to have been carried out by a breakaway group that swears allegiance to the terrorist network IS, according to the region's governor Bagagana Umara Zulum.
Around 35,000 civilians are estimated to have been killed during the movement's advance, and over two million have been forced to flee their homes, according to UN figures.
