Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno calls the attack cowardly and promises that the group will be fought "with renewed determination until this threat is completely eradicated."
Lake Chad stretches between Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, and its many islands provide a haven for jihadist groups such as Boko Haram. Attacks on military positions have increased over the past month in the area, especially around Niger's shores.
In October 2024, the group killed around 40 Chadian army soldiers. Déby responded with a counter-offensive, and in February last year the army declared that the group "no longer had any sanctuary on Chadian territory."
