Blykalla is applying to build the reactors, with a total output of up to 400 megawatts, in Untra in Tierp. They will be built directly adjacent to the Untra and Söderfors hydroelectric power plants.
Svenska kraftnät is simultaneously building new 400-kilovolt infrastructure through Tierp Municipality, making the location more suitable for additional electricity production.
The government's review of Blykalla's application is the first step in a multi-year process. After a possible approval, it will be reviewed by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, reviewed under the Environmental Code by the Land and Environment Court, and examined by Tierp Municipality. The planned start of operations is in the first half of the 2030s.
Earlier this year, Blykalla submitted an application for approval for a first facility in Norrsundet, Gävle Municipality.
