The person at the dementia home escaped injury because the blood, which was intended for another person at the dementia home, was compatible. The blood transfusion was immediately stopped after it was discovered that the wrong person had received the blood. The person had then received between half and one decilitre of blood, Region Västmanland writes on its website.

After the blood transfusion was stopped, the person was placed under observation. The attending physician contacted blood specialists and the transfusion emergency room at a university hospital.

The region is now filing a lex Maria report with the Swedish Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo).
