Ragn-Sells has developed a method for commercially producing oil and protein for animal feed from the black soldier fly, writes the Sellberg family's recycling conglomerate in a press release. But laws and regulations are slowing down large-scale production.

”A breakthrough in the effort to convert food waste into feed with the help of cultivated fly larvae”, writes Ragn-Sells.

According to Anders Kihl, research and development manager at Ragn-Sells, the product can replace fishmeal and soy in feed for both fish and birds and pigs.

The production so far amounts to about one ton of protein and 25 kilos of fat. Ragn-Sells states that regulatory changes are required for what you are allowed to do with different types of waste to build up a larger production.

”Today, it is not allowed to feed insects that will become feed with mixed waste, since the waste may contain animal by-products. Instead, the flies must be raised on separated vegetable waste, such as by-products from agriculture or food production”, writes Ragn-Sells.

The company adds that EU rules that prohibit phosphorus in feed also hinder increased production.
