"Politicians have the nerve to claim that they want to combat deforestation, but are delaying and watering down what protects our forests," writes Anke Schulmeister-Oldenhove from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) about the deal on Thursday.
In compromise negotiations between EU member states and the EU Parliament, it became clear that the so-called Deforestation Act, EUDR, will not come into force before December 30, 2026. In addition, further simplifications of the rules will be developed and presented already this spring.
The EUDR aims to stop imports of goods that come from land where rainforest has recently been logged, but has been criticized for causing too much bureaucracy for European companies.
