US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is cautious about his pledges regarding President Donald Trump's plans to distribute the state's customs revenue to citizens.

On Friday, Trump reiterated plans for a $2,000 payment from customs revenues to “all but the wealthy” Americans “sometime in 2026.”

However, Bessent aired reservations during an interview with Fox News' Sunday Morning Futures that it would require congressional approval, reports the Bloomberg news agency.

"We'll see. We need legislation for that," Bessent answers the question about the checks to households.

Calculations have been made that the payments could cost the government twice as much as the forecasted customs revenue this year.

But despite that, and despite his reservations, Bessent still believes that a dividend program is possible.

That's a lot of money. But we've brought in a lot of money from customs. Customs allows us to give dividends.
