The woman and her three children were on an outing in Wadi al-Nakhil, near the ancient city of Petra, together with a larger group of tourists when they were surprised by the rain. 14 tourists, all from the Czech Republic, were rescued on Sunday, but the Belgian family was missing.

Two of the children were later found alive, but on Monday, the authorities announced that the woman and one of the children had been found dead.

Nearly 1,800 tourists were evacuated from Petra, designated as one of the world's seven new wonders, in connection with the weekend's heavy rain.

Sudden floods are recurring in the country's dry desert areas. In 2018, more than 30 people died when Petra and the country's Dead Sea coast were hit by unexpected downpours.
