Former footballer Joey Barton has been convicted of making offensive comments about female football pundits, including comparing them to serial killers.

Joey Barton is convicted at a Liverpool court of six counts of "grossly offensive" social media posts by football pundits Lucy Ward and Eni Aluko, as well as TV presenter Jeremy Vine who defended the women.

The court considered that Barton had crossed the line between freedom of expression and criminality.

It has not yet been decided what punishment Barton will receive, writes the BBC.

Barton does not believe that female football pundits should be allowed to commentate on men's football and has called ITV commentators Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward football's answer to Fred and Rose West, perhaps Britain's worst serial killers. And he has likened Aluko to Josef Stalin and Pol Pot.

I'm scared, Aluko has said before.

There are laws to abide by. Being racist, sexist, misogynistic, and threatening people online is not about free speech. I'm afraid what will happen if we don't stop this is a woman taking her own life.

The former football player, who retired in 2017 and has since had a couple of unsuccessful attempts as a coach, defends his posts as "black and wacky humor" and he believes he is the victim of a "political prosecution."
