The Bank of England lowered its key interest rate to the current level of 3.75 percent in December last year.
The average forecast among analysts ahead of the April meeting was that the policy rate would remain there.
The announcement comes after the US Federal Reserve left its key interest rate unchanged in a statement on Wednesday. The European Central Bank (ECB) is also expected to leave its key interest rate unchanged in a statement this afternoon, as is the Swedish Central Bank in its interest rate statement on May 7.
