Nine years in prison. This will be the punishment for the bank employee in Japan who manipulated the employer's security system and stole gold bars to finance their gambling addiction.

The woman, who worked for the bank Mitsubishi UFJ, stole gold and cash to a value of approximately over 24 million kronor. This was to finance currency trading that had not gone her way as well as betting on horses, according to court documents.

Through insider knowledge, she was able to put the bank's security system out of play during 2023 and 2024 and steal gold bars and cash from customers' bank vaults.

A judge at the Tokyo District Court describes the crime as "abhorrent". He says that the nine-year prison sentence is unavoidable, despite the woman being previously unconvicted and having promised to undergo treatment for gambling addiction.

The bank has not managed to recover all of the stolen goods.
