The Swedish Maritime Administration has previously warned that GPS disruptions in the Baltic Sea can pose a danger to pleasure craft. Now the authority has noted that even the ships' radar is affected, reports Expressen.

To my knowledge, we have not had any observation of radar disruptions before, says Sebastian Wigmo, press spokesperson at the Swedish Maritime Administration to the magazine.

To disrupt the radar, more advanced methods are required than to disrupt gps systems. The Swedish Maritime Administration does not speculate about what could be behind the radar disruption but notes that it cannot have occurred naturally.

On the other hand, we cannot say that it is intentional. Theoretically, it could be an unconscious mistake that affects the radar, says Sebastian Wigmo.

A number of EU countries are demanding that the EU Commission take action to try to strengthen the gps systems, which also affect air traffic. Disruptions to gps are said to have increased in intensity during the spring.
