Last week, the Swedish Food Agency suggested that people under the age of 16 should not consume more than 70 milligrams of caffeine a day. An energy drink can contain 80 to 200 milligrams.
The authority is now launching a Nordic research project to find out why young people drink energy drinks. Young people aged 15 to 19 are being involved to develop suggestions for reducing consumption.
They will take part in a preliminary study, meet with experts and then discuss a solution together with discussion leaders, says the Swedish National Food Agency's toxicologist Sabina Litens Karlsson.
The project is led from Sweden and is expected to be completed in 2027 or early 2028.
