The border crossings are closed until May 20. Austrian hunters are also urged to keep an eye out for symptoms in potentially infected wildlife.
The border crossings that are still open have taken extended control measures to ensure that no living animals or meat products are transported. Even hikers who cross the borders on foot are being checked.
In Hungary, the military has been called in to try to curb the highly infectious viral disease, after an outbreak was confirmed at a farm in March. Around the same time, several cases were confirmed in neighboring Slovakia, which declared a state of emergency earlier in the week, according to Euronews.
Earlier this year, three cases of the disease were also detected in water buffalo in Germany.
