Starting December 10, social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok will be forced to remove users who are under the age of 16 in Australia.
Meta, which owns Instagram and Facebook, is criticizing the law, saying it could push young people to less regulated platforms, which it says could make it less safe for young people.
Lesser-known chat and photo-sharing apps, such as Lemon8 and Yope, are not currently covered by the ban. Downloads of the apps have skyrocketed in Australia.
Social media platform X says it will ban young people under the age of 16 from the platform.
"It's not our choice - it's what Australian law requires," X said in a statement.
If companies systematically fail to carry out age checks, they risk fines of up to around SEK 300 million.
