The wasp has been named Attenboroughnculus tau and was described in the Journal of Natural History, several media outlets report.
It was collected in Chile back in 1983 and then sent to the Natural History Museum in London, where the wasp ended up in the museum's collection of unidentified specimens before it was finally named.
Gavin Broad, a curator at the museum, told National Geographic that Attenborough was delighted to hear about the name.
He actually sent a very nice handwritten message saying he was very grateful.
To date, more than 50 species have been named in Attenborough's honour, including an ant, a porcupine and a spider named after the legendary nature filmmaker.
