"This is how Russia shows the world that it intends to continue the war."

This is what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X about the attacks that took place on Monday night. They included hundreds of Russian drones and dozens of missiles against the country's largest cities.

At least five people were killed in the capital Kyiv. Downed missiles and burning wreckage fell over the city. Among the thirty injured were two children, according to authorities.

And one of the city's landmarks, the Pechersk Lavra, founded in 1051, was on fire. The monastery, also known as the Cave Monastery and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was hit by two drones, according to Zelenskyy, who visited the site on Monday.

In Kharkiv, four rescue workers and one other person were killed in an operation. In Dnipro, people were also reported to have been injured after the Russian attacks. There was no immediate information on where the eleventh person, referred to by Zelenskyy in his post on X, was killed.

The attacking force, Russia, claims to have targeted defense and industrial facilities in the cities in question, primarily those involved in drone production.

Russia is also reporting deaths as a result of Ukrainian attacks overnight. In the city of Tula, three people are reported to have been killed.
