On Sunday, Asllani got her foot stuck in the grass in the league match between West Ham and her club, London City Lionesses.

The 36-year-old was left lying on the field with her hands over her face, screaming in pain and had to be carried off on a stretcher. Now the star has written on Instagram about the injury.

“Difficult to accept”

"Yesterday my world changed in an instant. I suffered the kind of injury every footballer fears. When it was confirmed, my heart was broken," Asllani writes and continues:

"I woke up this morning hoping it was a nightmare but when I felt the knee I started crying and couldn't stop. Football has given me everything and to be faced with this at this stage of my career is incredibly difficult to accept."

“It hurts so incredibly much”

The injury is also a nightmare for the Swedish national team, where Asllani is captain.

"It hurts so incredibly to see 'Kosse' suffer from this. It's hard to take in and brings up a lot of difficult feelings in all of us. She means so incredibly much to the team both on and off the field, but right now it's about us all being there for her," says national team coach Tony Gustavsson in a statement.

Gustavsson will name the squad for the World Cup qualifying matches against Denmark and Serbia on Wednesday, which will be played on April 14 and 18.

Expiring agreement

Kosovare Asllani is in the final stages of her career and for a long time it was not a given whether she would continue in the national team after the European Championship in Switzerland last summer.

When the national team started qualifying for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil in the fall, however, the national team star stood on the field with the captain's armband on her arm.

"I feel like I want to be there to help the team and build on it. Until they are ready to take over, so to speak," she told TT at the time.

Asllani was signed in 2024 by the big-spending English club London City Lionesses, who were then in the second division. She immediately helped the team to the top flight. Asllani's contract with the club expires after this season.
