It was already in 1992 that she began calling herself Mamma. And since the end of January this year, Karin Andersson has tried to make the artist name Karin Mamma her real first name. But now she gets a rejection of her request, according to SVT News Norrbotten.
In March, the Tax Authority rejected the application with the motivation: "The word mamma is not associated with a name and is therefore not compatible with Swedish naming conventions". She appealed to the Administrative Court – which now also says no.
"What Karin Andersson has presented, including that she has had the name Mamma in public contexts for a longer period, does not lead to any other assessment. The appeal shall therefore be rejected", it states in the judgment.
Andersson is one of Sweden's most well-known artists. She participated in the Venice Biennale in 2003 with paintings such as "Stairway to the stars" and in 2005, she received the Carnegie Art Award.
